I’m a 28 year old female, non-smoker, healthy. I came down with a cold over the past couple of days. It’s a typical head/chest cold: headache, some light coughing, sore throat, fatigue, aches and pains. I’ve been taking Tylenol Cold and am feeling better.
I woke up this morning with no fever, but with some pain in my chest (left side, front). It’s only noticeable when I move my left arm or shoulder (almost like I pulled a muscle), or when I take a very deep breath. Could this be just a cold symptom, or something more serious? It’s been like this for over 10 hours now.

It is very possible that you could have “chest wall pain” caused by your recent coughing. I agree with your other answer about Ibuprofen. Just follow the label directions. Ibuprofen (trade names are Motrin and Advil) is notoriously hard on the stomach….so you may want to eat something when you take it. At this point I don’t believe it’s anything serious. But if the pain worsens, or if you start to have trouble breathing…..then it could become serious and you’ll need to see a doctor or go to the emergency room. I hope you feel better soon and best of luck to you.
it might possibly be pleurasy ( spelling) believe thats when the mucous lining of your chest cavity is infected (from your infection) or its inflamed. i get it frequently when i get sick, please monitor yourself and see a doctor if the pain persists
You say you have only had light coughing? Then that most likely would not have pulled a muscle.
If you have Vick’s VapoRub or Icy Hot Or Mentholatum, rub your chest. This will heat up the muscle and the chest and lung area to help with the cold and probably relieve the pain.
I occasionally go to sleep with my arm over my head and when I wake up OUCH boy does it hurt. Could you have done something like that last night?
Good Luck I hope it feels better soon.
I will add an interesting for what it’s worth, Since my Husband and I began getting flu shots about 7 years ago we have neither one had a cold or sinus infection or the flu.
you either have a pulled muscle (possibly from coughing) or pleuritc chest pain which can be seen with a viral illness. It isn’t serious and will go away on its own. Take motrin 400 mg every 4 hours as needed for pain and inflammation.
the best thing i would say is call your doctor and tell him and he or she MIGHT assign you some medicine.umm ,that ‘s all i can thing of right now.
