Chest Pain & Purple Fingernails.?

January 21st, 2010 by admin Leave a reply »

Couple of months ago I started to experience chest pain on the left side and shortness of breath. The chest pain can range anywhere from my upper ribs (below my left breast) to below my sternum. I saw a doctor about this and they ran a full blood test and a ECG. The ECG results were fine and the blood test showed I had a vitamin D deficiency, but was otherwise all good. She suggested the symptoms were related to stress.
I’ve been taking vitamins for the D deficiency for around a month now, and am still feeling fatigued and experiencing random muscle pains (I’m not too sure how long a deficiency takes to correct itself…), as well as the chest pain and shortness of breath.
In addition, recently I noticed the bottom half of my fingernails are looking somewhat purple. Mainly around the moons (especially on my thumbs — I have genetically large moons on my thumbs). My hands do feel cold a lot of the time and I know that could be the cause, however.. I do know that this can also signal heart failure or lung problems. Given the other symptoms.. I thought I’d ask what you all thought?

Does the pain at night accompany shortness of breath, specifically when you lie down? Does propping yourself up at night help with this shortness of breath?
I ask this because that purple/blue in your nail beds can be an indicator that you have low oxygen in your extremities (hypoxia). Furthermore, with your chest pains, this could be an indicator of poor circulation due to your heart.
This can be caused by many things, but more specific to what your doctor may question is poor flow through your arteries especially near your heart or some form of congestive heart failure where your left side of you heart isn’t beating as strong as it should be and the rest of your body not getting sufficient blood flow/oxygen. This can also lead to eventually backing up into your circulation in your lungs. This would cause that shortness of breath I asked about. This would be made especially bad when you lie down.
Now, I’ve given you some information that makes it sound very bad, but you’ve just seen your doctor, who did an ECG, which should show some defects in flow if they’re there. Also, if your BP is normal, this should be a good indicator that you’re fine. At the same time, this pain isn’t normal, so it definitely needs to be explained.
Another possibility is that it’s heartburn, maybe? This may have already been proposed, and ruled out though. This might also flare up when you lie down, especially if you eat near bedtime.
Consider some of these things and be sure to try and take note of what specifically triggers your pain/shortness of breath. If this continues, you should see your doctor again – a cardiologist if the previous doctor was not one.

raynaud’s phenomena with general anxiety, it sounds like. get some mittens on your hands, go out for a stroll and calm down.
i have this; went to a doctor a year ago, freaking out because my hands were blue and i couldn’t breathe, my chest was in pain. . . just anxiety and a little vein problem.

While I am not discounting the possibility of Reynauds, I am concerned about the chest pain and shortness of breath, especially since you do not mention your gender or age. I would suggest a followup ECG, blood tests for cardiac enzymes and a stress test.

I reckon it is a good idea to get a second opinion from another good doctor. At least then you would feel they have read the results correctly. Also, going for a qi gong massage would help. As I have learned from my chinese dr (who does the qi gong massage), stomach problems like indigestion etc can cause the ‘wind’ to go up to your chest area, where you will find yourself uncomfy and feel like you have a heart problem. If a Dr knows how to treat this by carrying out massages on the relevant pressure points(or is it acupuncture points- sorry, not too sure what it is in English), it will help and gradually your pain should stop.
Good luck! Hope you find out the cause of the pain v soon and also a good qi gong massage Dr. Get well soon.

    In short,
    1. your heart is weaker than other organs, which means that your heart
has not enough power to bear required energy foe living. It has your heart get fatigue and will disorder in future. You need to get rid of the overload of your heart.
    2. the symptpoms during day -> this means that it is getting worse.
At first the symptoms relating to heart appears during night because all organs of body should be take rest in night so the heart also take a rest in night, which makes the heart reduce the energy supplied to the heart. But if the fatigue is increased in heart, the energy to be supplied to heart is short even in daytime.
the nail color -> means that the blood circulation is not good. It has also the heart overloaded.
    3. Prevention and treatment
    I recommend the herbal treatment.
