I Experienced A Sharp Gripping Pain In My Chest That Lasted 2-3 Hours. Could It Have Been A Heart Attack?

January 17th, 2010 by admin Leave a reply »

I have a family history of heart attack and have a heart valve problem. My blood pressure tend to be a bit high and the last reading was 140/100. The pain was in the middle of my chest, bellow my ribs and stretch to my left arm. I am very tired lately and sometime feel out of breath. Could this have been a heart attack?

The pain you describe and the length of time it lasted for are concerning, and although sometimes these pains turn out to be muscular, I would suggest you seek medical attention as it is impossible to exclude the possibility of this pain being cardiac i.e. heart related. This is obviously based on the very short description you have given but I would definitely advise you to seek medical attention urgently.

Angina pectoris, commonly known as angina, is severe chest pain due to ischemia (a lack of blood and hence oxygen supply) of the heart muscle, generally due to obstruction or spasm of the coronary arteries (the heart’s blood vessels). Coronary artery disease, the main cause of angina, is due to atherosclerosis of the cardiac arteries.
Unstable angina is a condition in which your heart doesn’t get enough blood flow and oxygen. It is a prelude to a heart attack. Most people experience a feeling of chest discomfort or shortness of breath.
    Consult a cardiologist.

It is not impossible, I do wonder of course how you expect to sort this out and get any sort of diagnosis, or reassurance for that matter on line.
You need a treponin T blood test, provided the incident was at least 12 hours ago, a resting ECG, and if these are both negative, you still need an exercise ECG as well.
Arrange a medical contact as soon as possible.

You could be what’s determined as an angina, heart trouble but, not an attack, yet. You can walk around for days this way, your hearts asking you to get it to a doctor and I would if I were you, listen. If you go into heart attack mode, you might not come out.

I am a Qualified GP and this sounds more like a Lupus attack, you probably have Lupus and don’t realise it
Go to your GP straight away and get tested for Lupus
