Son Who Is 22 Has Been Having Pain In The Center Of His Chest Since Last Night?

October 7th, 2009 by admin Leave a reply »

He said it started while he was laying on the couch and he had just ate pizza. He said it feels like a pulled muscle and is a constant pain, but he hasn’t been doing anything strenuous. He said it gets worse when moving around and feels better when laying still. He said it is in the center of his chest and did not have any pain running down his arm or neck or any where else or any other symptoms. He is 22 and smokes . Is this his heart or could it be something else? He will not go to the doctor, I already tried to get him to go.

First… He really should to to the doctor or ER.
That being said, the fact that it is provoked by movement makes it sound more like a muscular problem or a broken rib that a heart related issue. But it could still be a heart related issue. Try some ibuprophen to see if that eases the pain. Broken ribs and sore muscles will respond not only to the analgesic properties of the med, but also the anti-inflammatory properties.
    And go to the doctor.

It could easily be heartburn or acid reflux (especially with something greasy and acid-y like pizza). Smoking might also point to a respiratory problem, but only if the pain is with breathing no matter the position.
Of course chest pain could also mean a heart problem (possible at 22 when a smoker and indications of a poor diet).
Take some TUMS, drink some water and rest. If it doesn’t get better or there is difficulty breathing/shortness of breath, nausea, disorientation, dizziness, or the pain gets worse, get to the ER.

Unless he is short of breath, I would give him pepto-bisthmol. If you tell me at the ER, he ate a pizza, they are just going to give him pepto anyways. This way if you take him later, you can say, you tried that.

He’s only 22 so there is little chance its his heart even though he smokes unless there is hereditary heart problems in the family.
Although its kind of rare in young males, It could be gall stones if he doesn’t have the best diet and its been that way for many years.
If he is reluctant to see a doctor only suggestion is to take 2 panadiene (strong panadol with codeine) and if the pain doesn’t go away see a doctor immediately.
Regardless if the pain does go away after taking pain killers make an appointment to see a doctor to investigate what exactly is the cause as he is likely to have further attacks.
