How To Recognize The Signs Of Cardiac Arrest

September 26th, 2011

Cardiac arrest is not a condition you want to mess with it can in fact happen quite suddenly and without warning. Cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack, a heart attack causes damage to the heart muscle, cardiac arrest is complete dysfunction of the heart muscle. When immediate attention by medical professionals is unavailable it is likely that cardiac arrest will end in death. The symptoms of cardiac arrest are discussed here. By the way, if you are starting to get up there in years, it is a good idea to start checking out senior insurance. Make sure that you check out this article about travel insurance for seniors, highly recommended.

Before cardiac arrest occurs there isn’t always any obvious warning signs, although many lifestyle and health factors contribute to a person’s vulnerability. Men in their thirties and forties are the most likely to suffer from sudden cardiac arrest even though most heart conditions are associated with older people. Men and women of any age can be struck by sudden cardiac arrest. This means that a person who appears to be in good health, and is not suffering any prior symptoms can still have cardiac arrest. That’s why it’s important to immediately call for medical help if you suspect this is happening to someone, even if you don’t think that this is someone likely to have heart problems. If help is not received quickly enough in a person displaying signs of cardiac arrest, the result can be their death. Sometimes a person who is about to go into cardiac arrest will have dizziness or nausea as a symptom before this happens. In a person at risk for heart disease, these symptoms which can be caused by other issues as well, are a definite cause for concern. People who are considered healthy as well as young people can suffer from heart problems so any symptoms need to be taken seriously. Feeling lightheaded can occur to some people while having a heart attack. Because the heart doesn’t generally stop during a heart attack, this is not the same as going into cardiac arrest. But because heart attacks can lead to cardiac arrest, as can other heart conditions, it is important to treat any heart related symptoms immediately.

As we’ve discussed thus far, cardiac arrest is a sudden killer causing the heart to completely stop that is often preventable. Unfortunately, in many cases these don’t come in the form of noticeable symptoms, which is why it’s important to get regular medical checkups. Probably the most undiagnosed and still most important risk factor of cardiac arrest is coronary artery disease which isn’t often diagnosed early enough to save your life. Doctors can diagnose this using a number of tests, but a major sign is having high cholesterol. Once you’ve been diagnosed with any of these conditions you have options to help reduce your likelihood of cardiac arrest. The reality is that this condition goes undiagnosed so people who have it don’t usually know it until it’s too late.

Avoiding the risk factors and knowing the symptoms of cardiac arrest can put you in a great position for avoiding it. A heart specialist is the person best equipped to tell you about your risk factors and what you can do to protect yourself from heart disease. As you can see the best way to assess your risk for cardiac arrest is with medical procedure testing. Before you go, remember to check out this article on burial insurance for seniors.

Shaking, Uncontrollable Vomiting, Chest Pain, Dizziness, Blood In Vomit?

February 14th, 2010

Hi,
I want to say this without sounding terribly terribly stupid. Well, I am experiencing the symptoms above. I felt somewhat sick all day (run down, tired, just overall ill feeling) and well, I guess I’m “bulimic” and I was purging- that’s when the uncontrollable vomiting started. Sure, I initiated it, but then I couldn’t stop it for almost two hours. Now I’m just shaking, I can’t keep anything down, and I feel dizzy and have some chest pain on and off.
Before you jump to conclusions and say it was bulimia-related, do you think it could have stemmed from something else (like the stomach flu)? If I go to the doctor, will it be obvious that I’m bulimic (I started purging in March of last year, and I purge 4-5 times a week)?
Thank you and sorry for your trouble!

Chest Pain And Dizziness, What’s Going On?

January 20th, 2010

Hi, I’ve had a recent (probably last 6 months) problem with chest pain and dizziness. Over the last 6 months, I’ve developed a mild chest pain which comes and goes, but has increased overall over time. I went to the emergency room about 6 months ago for it, and the doctor did a battery of tests and told me it was probably asthma, and prescribed an inhaler for when the pains come back. I tried that and it did nothing.
Oh, about me, I’m 24, have a BMI of about 28, and in average shape. I exercise about an hour a day 5 days a week and can usually handle at least 30 min+ hard exercise (basketball, swimming, hiking) before I even start to feel winded or tired.
Anyways, about a week before yesterday, I started to have unusual tiredness (walking up stairs made me winded). The day before yesterday, my pain came back reasonably strongly (about 4-5/10) and I was very dizzy, somewhat short of breath, cold, weak, extremely tired, and had trouble focusing. So, I went to the emergency room. I was admitted and they did the full battery of tests, blood, EKG, urine, x-ray. They said my chest x-ray looked fine, my blood showed no signs of the enzyme marker for heart distress. The only test that came back unusual was that my liver function test was slightly abnormal. I was hooked onto a monitor during my stay, and in that time my heart rate ranged from 75-125 despite the fact that I was laying down and relaxed, and my SPO2 ranged fluctuated from 93-100. They gave me some IV fluids which made me feel better, and discharged me with the diagnosis of stress/anxiety. I followed up yesterday with my primary care doctor and he said the same thing.
Today, my symptoms are back. I went for a short walk (about 1000 yards up the street and back) and I felt very short of breath right after, and as of me writing this, I have chest pain and feel somewhat faint. Earlier today, I had some chest pain and pressure, felt very faint with a tingling feeling (the kind you get when you hand falls asleep) in my head and almost passed out. What’s going on?????
I know the battery of tests show I’m fine, but is it possible something could be wrong that can’t be detected by the standard battery of tests? a genetic heart disorder? something else?; or is this really all “in my head” (anxiety/stress). I’m typically pretty laid back and don’t get particularly worked up about anything so I have difficulty believing the stress as an only explanation. I’d just like to figure this out once and for all. Thanks in advance for the help!
