Treatment For Sternum Pain In Daughter’s Chest?

November 15th, 2009

My daughter was trying to flip backwards onto her bed…well, she didn’t make it. What she did was drive her chin into her chest. It has been approx. 1 week and it is still sore to the touch enough that medium pressure there will make her cry. She said it doesn’t hurt her unless pressed upon. We didn’t go to the doctor because she said she was fine and we knew she would be sore. Is it possible she could have a cracked sternum and if so – are there any treatments for it besides tylenol or advil? What recovery time are we looking at with/without treatments?

Treatment For Low Hemoglobin Level With Chest Pain?

November 11th, 2009

If you are having undiagnosed chest pain, then you should take a trip to the ER. As for the low hematocrit, it depends on how low your H&H (hemoglobin & hematocrit) is. If it’s low enough, you may need to be transfused. Otherwise, there are meds to boost the production of blood components. The first thing is to find out why you have a low ‘crit. I hope you have been to a doctor.

Chest Pain After The Treatment Of Lymphoma?

October 28th, 2009

I was diagnosed with lymphoma Non Hodgkin’s (aggressive – fast growing type with a large anterior mediastinal mass of 10 x 14 cm) in Dec 2006. Completed my treatment of CHOP Chemotherapy and Rituximab Immunotherapy and ending up with radiation. After all the treatment, the tumor shrink-ed to 4 x 8 cm.
My last major checkup was a PET scan in Jan 2008 and the results indicate that the mass is inactive. Then around August 2008, i started to feel a little chest pain, but i did 2 LDH blood tests, which came out fine.
I´m wondering about how serious does this chest pain indicate? Do I automatically assume that Í am having a relapsed or is it possible that its an irritation ? I do realize that the best solution is to meet my doctor but it will be another month till I return to my home country and meet up with him. During this month, I would love to know what I can expect.
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated from either medical personnels, ex patient or relatives of such.

An Evolution of Mitral Valve Prolapse for Heart Surgical Procedures

October 28th, 2009

The heart itself is a muscle with the responsibility of pumping blood throughout the body via an arrangement of interconnecting arteries, veins and heart valves referred to as the cardiovascular system. All the same, to be able comprehend mitral valve shift, you need to know ho the heart performs. There are four chambers in the heart the right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. Separating the right chambers is the tricuspid valve while the mitral valve separates the left chambers. Oxygen poor blood flows from the body into the right atrium. The tricuspid valve opens in response to the heart beating and allows the blood from the right atrium to empty into the right ventricle. Then this blood is sent to the lungs for oxygenation. The oxygenated blood flows into the left atrium and then passes through the mitral valve into the left ventricle.

The left ventricle is the strongest chamber in the heart because it is required to push the blood volume through the body. And in return, places increase pressure on the gate between the left atrium and left ventricle, the mitral valve. This valve looks somewhat similar to an open parachute when closed. Mitral valve prolapse occurs when this parachute like closing begins to bulge into the left atrium. While this in itself is not dangerous, it can and most often does lead to mitral valve regurgitation. This condition is when blood that is to be pumped from the left ventricle out into the body is forced backwards through a partially open mitral valve into the left atrium.

Related:  heart valve replacement

If this condition that initially started as mitral valve prolapse and turned into mitral valve regurgitation becomes severe a multitude of problems can occur. If the regurgitation is great enough, there will be an increased amount of blood in the left atrium that can extend into the lungs. In addition, the left ventricle is forced to work harder leading to an increase in size and can eventually lead to heart failure.Like with most medical cases, avoiding this or discovering the problem in time is the solution.

The cause of this dysfunction is due to physical changes in the valve itself like thickening or a distorted shape. All the same, how this originates is not certain yet and may be it could be traced back to the family history. While diagnosis is important, the difficult part is that many people do not experience symptoms related to mitral valve prolapse. Many times, it will be found during a routine physical exam in a doctor’s office. He or she will note a ‘murmur’ when listening to your heart that may alert him or her to a problem. If this is the case, an echocardiogram will be ordered to confirm the suspicions. With the confirmation of a mitral valve prolapse, treatment may only be scheduled follow-ups to check the progress or lack of in the prolapse.
